Latvian and Latvian Translation

Latvian, sometimes known as Lettish, is the official language of the Republic of Latvia. There are approximately 1.5 million speakers in Latvia, and about 200,000 others living abroad. Latvian is one of the two living members of the Baltic language group of the Indo-European language family. The other living Baltic language is Lithuanian.

Although related to Lithuanian, there are major differences in vocabulary, and the two languages are mutually unintelligible. There are three major dialects of Latvian, with the Middle dialect considered to be the standard form. Latvian is written using a modified form of the Latin script.

The Latvian language is highly inflective, and contains German syntactical influence. During the years of Soviet occupation, Latvian was greatly influenced by the policy of Russification, with many ethnic Latvians being deported or persecuted, and ethnic Russians being re-settled in Latvia. Because of these policies, little over 60% of the population of Latvia speaks Latvian as their mother tongue.
