Akan (Twi) is an Akan language spoken in the southern parts of Ghana by the Akan people, as well as parts of Ivory Coast. Three dialects have been identified: Asanta, Akuapem (together called "Twi") and Fante. There is a high degree of mutual intelligibility between the various dialects, although they exhibit certain differences in phonology.
Akan (Twi) was also brought to parts of the Caribbean and South America (mainly Suriname) by African slaves, where a form of the language has been maintained. Akan (Twi) is also a tonal language, and is written using the Latin alphabet.
