Bulgarian is a member of the Southern Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family, and is also part of the Balkan linguistic union, which also includes Greek, Macedonian, Romanian, Albanian, and the Torlakian dialect of the Serbian language. Bulgarian was the first Slavic language to appear in writing.
Bulgarian was first written using the old runic alphabet, which was then replaced by the Glagolitic alphabet, and finally by several different variations of the Cyrillic alphabet. Today, it is written with the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets (most street signs in Bulgaria are written in both forms).
Bulgarian is spoken by around 10-12 million people, primarily in Bulgaria, but also significant communities in Macedonia, Ukraine, Greece, Moldova, Romania, and Serbia. It is also one of the official languages of the European Union.
