Burmese and Burmese Translation
Burmese is the official language of Myanmar (formerly Burma), and is spoken by the Bamar people, along with a number of other sub-ethnic groups. It is classified among the Tibeto-Burman languages, which in turn is a sub-family of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by approximately 32 million people as a first language, and as a second language by various other ethnic groups in Myanmar.
The "standard" dialect of Burmese is from Yangon, Myanmar's largest city. There are also two major forms: formal (literary) and colloquial, which is the form used in every day speech. This discrepancy between formal and vernacular forms of a language, known as Diglossia, has caused some linguists to consider formal and colloquial Burmese to be two separate languages.
Burmese has its own script, which is derived from the Mon and Brahimi scripts.
