This is the language of the Byelorussian people, and is spoken primarily in Byelorussia (Belarus), Ukraine, Russia, and Poland. There are an estimated 9 million native speakers worldwide. Byelorussian is a member of the East Slavonic language group, which also includes Russian and Ukrainian. These three languages share many similar features.
There are two main dialects of Byelorussian: the North-Eastern and South-Western variants. During Soviet times, Byelorussian was viewed as a "peasant" language, as opposed to the more "sophisticated" and "urban" Russian language. Since independence, however, this view has changed somewhat, especially among younger members of society.
The Byelorussian alphabet is based on the Cyrillic script. In the past, the Latin and Arabic alphabets have also been used.
