Catalan is a Romance language spoken as the official language in Andorra, and also holds co-official status in the Spanish autonomous communities of the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Valencia, and the the historical region of Catalonia in southern France. Catalan is very similar to Occitan, a Romance language spoken in southern France, Monaco, the Occitan Valleys of Italy, and the Aran Valley of Spain.
It developed from vulgar Latin around the 9th century, and shares features with both the Ibero-romance and Gallo-romance languages. Today, there are approximately 7.5 million speakers of the Catalan language.
The two major dialects of Catalan are the Eastern and Western variants. The term "Valencian" is used to refer to the language spoken in the Valencian community, although it is virtually identical to Catalan, with fewer differences between them than American and British English. Catalan uses an adapted version of the Latin alphabet.
