Georgian is a member of the South Caucasian language family (also known as Kartvelian), which also includes Svan, Megrelian, Gruzinic (also referred to as "Judeo-Georgian" because of its primary link to the Jewish population of Georgia) and Laz. There are approximately 3.9 million speakers of Georgian in Georgia, a former republic of the Soviet Union, as well as approximately half a million speakers in other areas, mostly Turkey, Iran, and Russia.
Georgian is almost exclusively written with the Mkhedruli ("military") alphabet. It contains 33 letters that are in common use, and another half dozen are almost entirely obsolete. The letters are in close correspondence to the sounds of Georgian. The forms of the Georgian letters are believed to be have been loose imitations of the Greek alphabet.
