This is a West Scandinavian language of the North Germanic language group. It is the official language of Iceland, with approximately 300,000 speakers. It is most closely related to Faroese and certain West Norwegian dialects, descendants of the western dialects of Old Norse. Compared with other living Germanic languages, Icelandic is considered to be relatively archaic. Icelandic grammar is heavily inflected, and resembles Old Norwegian before its inflection was greatly simplified.
The Icelandic alphabet retains two letters which no longer exist in the English alphabet, Þ/þ and Ð/ð, representing the voiceless and voiced "th" sound, respectively. Accented letters are considered to be separate letters and not variants of their derivative vowels. The letter "z" was abolished in 1929.
