This language is spoken by the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria, as well as parts of Equatorial Guineau, where it is recognized as a minority language. There are at least 20 recognized dialects of the Igbo language, although a standard literary format (using the Latin script, introduced by British colonists) was implemented in 1972, based on the Owerri and Umuahia dialects.
Igbo is a tonal language, with high and low tones. Igbo was spread to the New World as a result of the African slave trade, and examples of Igbo influence can still be found in the Jamaican Patois language. Currently, there are approximately 27 million speakers of Igbo worldwide.
