This is one of the Dravidian languages of India, spoken primarily in the southern state of Karnataka. There are also sizeable communities of Kannada speakers in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Goa. It is the 27th most widely spoken language in the world, with an estimated 35 million native speakers.
The history of Kannada can be traced back roughly 2,000 years. Its initial development was similar to other Dravidian languages, such as Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. It was also greatly influenced by Sanskrit in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and literary styles.
There are significant differences between the spoken and written forms of Kannada. The spoken language varies from region to region, whereas the written form is mainly constant. Kannada has approximately twenty dialects, each influenced by their respective regionís cultural background.
Kannada is written using the Kannada script with 49 phonemic letters divided into three groups. The character set is almost entirely identical to other Indian languages, derived from brahmi script.
