This language is spoken by the Karen people, who live primarily in Burma and parts of Thailand. Karen is spoken by approximately 7 million people.
Karen is a Tibeto-Burman language, is written using the Burmese script, and is tonal. Unlike most other Tibeto-Burman languages, Karen uses a "Subject-Verb-Object" (SVO) word order, likely a result of influence from nearby Mon and Tai languages. Karen is also unusual in that it shows no Chinese influences. The three main branches of Karen are: Sgaw, Pwo and P'ao.
