Lao and Lao Translation

With over 5 million speakers, this is the official language of Laos. It is a member of the Tai-Kadai language family, which includes Thai, Lao, and Zhuang (a language spoken in southern China). Besides Laos, there are also significant numbers of Lao speaking communities in Thailand, China, the U.S., France, and Canada.

There are five main dialects of Lao, with Vientiane Lao being the most predominant, and understood throughout the country. The Vientiane dialect contains six tones, although pitch levels vary based on the speaker's ethnicity and geographic location.

The Lao script is most likely based on an older version of the Khmer script, and contains 33 consonants and 28 vowels, written from left to right without spaces in between words.
