This is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of India and Myanmar (Burma). It is the official language of Nepal, as well as the Indian state of Sikkim. There are approximately 40 million speakers of Nepali worldwide (17 million of which are native speakers) and approximately half the population of Nepal speaks it as their mother tongue.
Nepali is the easternmost of the Pahari languages, which are spoken across the lower elevations of the Himalaya range. Having developed in proximity to a number of Tibeto-Burman languages, the language shows a number of Tibeto-Burman influences. It is closely related to Hindi, although it shows fewer borrowings from English and Persian, using more Sanskritic derivations. No other modern language is more closely related to Sanskrit than Nepali. Today, Nepali is written using the Devanagari script, although it was previously written in Bhujimol, a script native to Nepal.
We can offer services from English to any language and from any language to English. If you do not see your language listed here, please contact Schreiber Translations for a personal assessment of your language project. We can help!
