Norwegian and Norwegian Translation

This is a North Germanic language and the official language of Norway. Along with Swedish, Danish, Faroese, and Icelandic, it is a member of the Scandinavian languages. Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish share a high degree of mutual intelligibility, while Faroese and Icelandic have diverged considerably from their mainland relatives. There are approximately 4.7 million speakers of Norwegian worldwide.

Most Norwegian vocabulary dates back to the time of Old Norse, with most loanwords coming from Middle Low German. English is currently the largest source of new loanwords.

Bokmål and Nynorsk are the two main "dialects" of Norwegian. Bokmål is a Norwegianized version of Danish, which used to be the standard written language of Norway, while Nynorsk is a language based on Norwegian dialects and purist opposition to Danish. An attempt was made to merge the two into one common dialect ("Samnorsk"), but this was opposed by a majority of Norwegians and was finally abandoned in 2002. While Norwegians are educated in both Bokmål and Nynorsk, Bokmål is the more widely used.

We can offer services from English to any language and from any language to English. If you do not see your language listed here, please contact Schreiber Translations for a personal assessment of your language project. We can help!
