Polish and Polish Translation
This is the most widely spoken West Slavic language, and the official language of Poland. There are approximately 43 million total speakers, 38 million of whom live in Poland. After Russian, Polish is the second most-spoken of the Slavic languages.
In the 16th through 18th centuries, Polish was the lingua franca in large parts of Central and Eastern Europe, due to the political, cultural, scientific, and military influence of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Today, while a number of Polish dialects do exist, the language is mostly homogenous, with only slight variations in different regions.
Polish is a highly inflected language, maintaining the Old Slavic case system. The Polish gender system is very complex, due to a combination of three categories: gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), personhood (personal vs. non-personal), and animacy (animate vs. inanimate). Polish verbs are inflected based on gender, person, and number.
The Polish alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet, but utilizes diacritics. However, unlike other Slavic languages that adopted Latin-based alphabets, Polish does not utilize the Czech orthography, but instead developed a system of its own.
