Portuguese and Portuguese Translation
Portuguese is ranked as one of the world's major languages, spoken natively by approximately 210 million people worldwide. It is classified as a Romance language, and developed in what is now Galicia (Spain) and northern Portugal. Although it is closely related to the other Romance languages, especially Spanish, they are not mutually intelligible.
When Portugal established its colonial and commercial empire in the 15th and 16th centuries, the language and culture spread as far away as Macau in China, Brazil, and Goa in India. Many Creole languages based on Portugal also sprung up in Africa and the Caribbean, and Portuguese is still a minor lingua franca in Africa
.Portuguese has two main dialect groups: those of Brazil and those of the Old World. The dialects of Asia and Africa are generally closer to Continental (European) Portuguese.
