Sanskrit and Sanskrit Translation

Sanskrit is a classical language of India, and the liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism. Its position in the cultures of South and Southeast Asia is akin to that of Latin and Ancient Greek. Vedic Sanskrit, which dates back to 1700 B.C.E., is the earliest known Indo-Aryan language, and one of the earliest of the Indo-European languages. Sanskrit is still spoken in a few traditional institutions in India, and there have been attempts at a revival of the language.

Sanskrit grammar features a complex verbal system, rich nominal declension, and extensive use of compound nouns. The Sanskrit grammatical tradition began in late Vedic India, culminating in the Trimuni Vyākarana ("Grammar of the Three Sages").

Originally, there was no standard writing system for Sanskrit. Instead, all the major writing systems of South Asia have been used over the centuries, with the Devanagari script becoming the de facto standard in the 19th century.
