Slovak and Slovak Translation
This is an Indo-European language from the West Slavic group of languages. It is spoken by approximately 6 million people, 5 million of whom are in Slovakia.
Slovak is largely mutually intelligible with Czech (although more so among the older generations), even though Slovak did not develop from the Czech language and only started to penetrate into Slovakia in the 14th century. During the time of the existence of Czechoslovakia, the spoken Slovak language took on numerous Czech words, idioms, and some features of the syntax. In turn, many Slovak features were lost. Slovak also carries a relatively high degree of mutual intelligibility with Polish and the Sorbian languages.
The main dialects of the Slovak language are Eastern, Central, Western, and Lowland. The dialect groups differ mainly in phonology, vocabulary, and inflection. Slovak is written using a modified form of the Latin alphabet.
