Slovene and Slovene Translation
This is an Indo-European language of the South Slavic language family. There are approximately 2 million speakers worldwide, the majority of whom live in Slovenia, where Slovene (also known as Slovenian) is the official language.
Slovenian is one of the few languages that has preserved the dual grammatical number from Proto-Indo-European. Along with Slovak, it is one of the two modern Slavic languages whose names literally mean “Slavic.” There are approximately 48 dialects of Slovene, for which there are varying degrees of mutual intelligibility.
During World War II, the Slovene language was suppressed by the occupying Axis powers. While it was a part of Yugoslavia, however, Slovene was one of the official languages of the Yugoslav federation and was used in all aspects of daily life in Slovenia. Today, Slovene is spoken by more people than it was at any point in its history.
The Slovene language uses a version of the Latin alphabet that was derived in the 1840s, consisting of 25 unique upper-case and lower-case letters, as well as a number of diacritics.
