Swedish and Swedish Translation

This is a North Germanic language and the official language of Sweden. It is also spoken in parts of Finland. Along with Norwegian, Danish, Faroese, and Icelandic, it is a member of the Scandinavian languages. Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish share a high degree of mutual intelligibility, while Faroese and Icelandic have diverged considerably from their mainland relatives. There are approximately 9.3 million speakers of Swedish worldwide.

The modern Swedish language developed from Old Norse (specifically Old East Norse), from which Danish evolved as well. The sub dialect of Old East Norse spoken in Sweden was Runic Swedish, while the version spoken in Denmark was Runic Danish. They are called runic because the main body of texts appears in the runic alphabet. The two dialects began to diverge beginning in approximately 1100 C.E.

During the 20th century, the Swedish language was standardized. The Swedish Language Council (Språkrådet) is the official regulator of the language, but does not attempt to control or enforce the language as does the Académie français for the French language. Besides the standardized version of Swedish, there are also still some rural dialects that can trace separate development all the way back to Old Norse, and are largely incomprehensible to most Swedes. Speakers of these dialects, however, can mostly all speak Standard Swedish as well.
