Tamil and Tamil Translation
Tamil is a Dravidian language with 77 million speakers. It is the official language of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and one of 23 languages recognized at the national level by the Indian constitution. In addition to India, it also has official status in Sri Lanka and Singapore, and is spoken in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, and several Persian Gulf states.
While Tamil has a number of dialects and registers, all are largely mutually intelligible variations on the elements of Classical Tamil. The language has a written history going back at least 2100 years, and shows less influence from Sanskrit than most of the other major languages of the Dravidian family. This is due partly to a 20th-century linguistic purity movement which sought to replace many foreign loanwords (including those from Sanskrit) with neologisms coined from native Tamil elements.
Tamil is written with an abugida called vatteluttu, which, along with most of the writing systems in use throughout South and Southeast Asia, is descended from the Brahmi script.
