Thai and Thai Translation
This is the national and official language of Thailand and the mother tongue of the Thai people. It is a member of the Tai group of the Tai-Kadai language family, and there are approximately 60-65 million speakers worldwide.
Thai is a tonal language that features complex orthography, relational markers, and a distinctive phonology. It is considered to be an analytic language, with Subject-Verb-Object word order, although the subject can often be omitted. The pronominal system varies according to the sex and relative status of the speaker and audience. All of these features make the Thai language extremely difficult to learn.
The standard dialect of Thai is often referred to as Central Thai or Siamese. In addition, there are numerous other dialects and Tai languages spoken in Thailand, although most people speak Central Thai as well. Thai also features several distinct registers, or forms for different social contexts. These include: Street Thai, Elegant Thai, Rhetorical Thai, Religious Thai (heavily influenced by Sanskrit and Pali), and Royal Thai (heavily influenced by Khmer). Most Thais can only speak at the first two levels, but can usually understand the others.
The Thai alphabet is derived from the Khmer script, which itself is modeled after the Brahmic script from the Indic family. The writing system and the language itself are also considered by many to be related to the Lao language. Most Laotians are able to read and speak Thai, as the grammar, intonation, vowels and so forth are all common with the Lao language.
