Tongan and Tongan Translation

Tongan is an Austronesian language with about 400,000 total speakers, and is the official language of Tonga.

Tongan is a Verb-Subject-Object (VSO) language, and is unusual among other Polynesian languages (such as Hawaiian, Samoan, and Maori) in that it has a definitive accent, meaning that while many languages use two article types (i.e. /a/ and /the/ in English), Tongan allows for three article types: an indefinite accent, definite accent and semi-definite accent.

The written Tongan language uses the Latin alphabet. Tongan also contains three registers, which are ordinary words, honorific words and regal words, as well as a further distinction between “polite” words and “derogatory” words. According to the Tongan History Association, “regal” words are mainly of Samoan origin, and are used only when used toward the King or God.

We can offer services from English to any language and from any language to English. If you do not see your language listed here, please contact Schreiber Translations for a personal assessment of your language project. We can help!
