Yiddish and Yiddish Translation
Yiddish is a non-territorial Germanic language written with the Hebrew alphabet and spoken predominantly by people of Jewish origin. It developed in Central and Eastern Europe during the 10th century, later spreading to other parts of the globe. Modern Yiddish (sometimes referred to as "Eastern Yiddish," the only dialects that are still in use) also contains a number of Slavic influences. At one time, Yiddish was under consideration to become the national language of the State of Israel, although Modern Hebrew was eventually chosen. However, Yiddish remains an important language in Israel, as well as the Jewish diaspora across the world. In 1996, the Council of Europe estimated that there are approximately two million speakers of Yiddish worldwide.
