Yoruba and Yoruba Translation
This is a dialect continuum of West Africa, with a total of 22 million speakers. It is the native tongue of the Yoruba people, and is spoken in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Traces of the language can be found in communities in Brazil, Sierra Leone, and Cuba. It is classified as a Niger-Congo language of the Yoruboid branch of Defoid, Benue-Congo.
The Yoruba dialect continuum itself consists of over fifteen varieties that are classified into three main dialect areas: Northwest, Central, and Southeast. Standard Yoruba is a separate member of the dialect cluster, and is the written form of the language used in schools and the broadcast media. It is based on the Ọyọ and Ibadan dialects, although it contains features from other dialects as well. Yoruba's writing system is derived from the Latin script.
